Guan Guimin
Guan Guimin is an award-winning operatic tenor who rose to fame in China in the 1980s before eventually moving to the United States. His style integrates Italian Bel canto with Chinese vocal methods,〔Campell, Neil. “Shen Yun Brings a Legacy to Nashville,” The Tennessee Tribune, December 16, 2010.〕 and has been described as having a pure, bright tone.〔(“The treble king, Guan Guimin ), Zhong guo gu qu wang.〕
Guan was born in 1946 in Changzhi, Shanxi province to a family of vegetable farmers.〔Zhang, Xinxin and Sang, Ye. “Chinese lives: an oral history of contemporary China.” MacMillan (1988). ISBN 0333433645〕 In 1983, he completed graduate studies in Chinese music and opera, and then began performing with the China Conservatory’s experimental orchestra. He was named a national first class performer by China’s Ministry of Culture, was received by future Chinese leader Hu Jintao,〔”China Report: Political, Social, and Military Affairs,” Foreign Broadcast Information Service (1985), Issues 41-47.〕 and went on to record songs for dozens of films and television shows in China.〔〔Zhao, Jingyu.
